Question:
Dear Tarun, in your dīkṣā-paramparā, one of the principal ācāryas after Śrī Jahnavā Mātā is Śrī Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita.
But in Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā (127) we read:
vasudāma sakhā yaś ca paṇḍitaḥ śrī-dhanañjayaḥ
“Kṛṣṇa’s friend Vasudāma became Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita in Gaura-līlā.”
Your Gurudeva, Śrī Ananta Dās Bābājī Mahārāja, practices and teaches mañjarī-bhāva-sādhana. How can this be if Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita is Vasudāma, a cowherd friend of Kṛṣṇa? Should the members of this lineage not practice sakhya-bhāva instead?
Answer:
Daṇḍavats. Jaya Śrī Rādhe!
First, let me clarify something that has caused considerable confusion: I have never heard anyone in our parivāra teach that Śrī Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita “changed his svarūpa” from a gopa into a mañjarī.
That is not how we understand this.
Can One Soul Have More Than One Spiritual Form?
The first point to understand is that there is no absolute Vedāntic principle stating that a liberated jīva can manifest only one spiritual form.
In his commentary on Vedānta-sūtra 4.4.12, Śrī Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa explains the extraordinary freedom of the liberated soul. Citing the Chāndogya Upaniṣad (7.26.2), he writes:
sa ekadhā bhavati dvidhā tridhā bhavati pañcadhā saptadhā navadhā caiva punaś caikādaśa smṛtaḥ…
“He becomes one. Then he becomes two. Then three. Then five. Then seven. Then nine. Then eleven…”
The point is not that every liberated soul must possess multiple forms. Rather, the point is that such manifestation is possible. The liberated soul is no longer limited by the conditions of material embodiment.
And the spiritual desire manifested in perfection is not arbitrary. It develops through sādhana.
Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura beautifully expresses this principle in Prema-bhakti-candrikā:
yugala caraṇa sevi, nirantara ei bhāvi,
anurāgī thākibo sadāya
sādhane bhāvibo yāhā, siddha-dehe pābo tāhā,
rāga-pathe ei se upāya
“I will always contemplate the service of the lotus feet of the Divine Couple and remain deeply attached to it. Whatever I contemplate during sādhana, I will attain in my siddha-deha upon perfection. This is the path of rāga-bhakti.”
Thus the spiritual identity realized in perfection corresponds to the devotional aspiration cultivated in sādhana.
Vasudāma Sakhā and Madana Mañjarī
If multiple spiritual manifestations are possible even for a liberated jīva, there is certainly no reason to impose material limitations upon the eternal associates of the Lord.
Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu Himself provides the most familiar example: He is Balarāma, yet in the confidential service of Śrī Rādhā He is also known as Anaṅga Mañjarī.
Our parivāra understands Śrī Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita in the same way.
He is Vasudāma Sakhā in sakhya-rasa, and he is Śrī Madana Mañjarī in mādhurya-rasa.
There is therefore no question of one svarūpa being discarded and replaced by another.
Vasudāma is moreover not an ordinary cowherd friend. He belongs to the intimate priya-narma-sakhās, the confidential friends of Kṛṣṇa who participate in and assist His amorous pastimes with the gopīs. Their sakhya is intimately connected with mādhurya.
Mahāprabhu’s Extraordinary Gift
This principle becomes even more beautiful when seen in the light of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s mercy.
In Kavi Karṇapūra’s Śrī Caitanya-candrodaya-nāṭaka, Mahāprabhu promises His associates spiritual bodies suitable for entering His eternal Vṛndāvana pastimes according to their own devotional taste:
vṛndāraṇyaika-niṣṭhān sva-ruci-sama-tanūn kārayiṣyāmi yuṣmān
“I will give you spiritual bodies corresponding to your own taste for entering the pastimes of Vṛndāvana.”
Śrī Advaita Ācārya responds:
nijecchayā prāpaya yad yad eva
sthalāntaraṁ no vapur antaraṁ vā
“By Your desire, may You grant us different eternal residences and different eternal forms.”
This is a beautiful glimpse into the inconceivable freedom and mercy of the spiritual world. Spiritual identity is not confined by the limitations we experience in material existence.
Another Beautiful Example
My Gurudeva gives another wonderful example in Śrī Prabodhānanda Sarasvatīpāda.
Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā identifies Śrī Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī as Tuṅgavidyā-sakhī, one of Śrī Rādhikā’s eight principal sakhīs. Yet in his Rādhā-rasa-sudhā-nidhi, his heart overflows with the aspiration and mood of Śrī Rādhā’s intimate maidservant.
My Gurudeva explains that through Śrīman Mahāprabhu’s unlimited mercy, Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī became absorbed in this astonishing kiṅkarī-bhāva.
The spiritual world cannot be reduced to the limitations of our material logic.
Our Parivāra
Śrī Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita was an extraordinarily great Vaiṣṇava and a beloved associate of Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu. Caitanya-bhāgavata describes Nityānanda as permanently residing within his heart, and Caitanya-caritāmṛta praises him as Nityānanda Prabhu’s dear servant, deeply renounced and filled with love for Kṛṣṇa.
In our parivāra, we worship Śrī Dhanañjaya Paṇḍita in his mañjarī-svarūpa as Śrī Madana Mañjarī.
This is the teaching that has come down through our lineage, and this is what I have received from my beloved Gurudeva, Śrī Ananta Dās Bābājī Mahārāja.
Others are naturally free to follow the teachings and understanding they have received in their own lineage. There is no need for controversy.
For me personally, the matter is very simple: I follow my Gurudeva.
And therefore there is nothing contradictory whatsoever in my Gurudeva, his Gurudeva, and the ācāryas of our parivāra practicing mañjarī-bhāva-sādhana with the aspiration to eternally follow the maidservants of Śrīmatī Rādhikā.
Jaya Śrī Rādhe!
