There is sometimes confusion about the position of bhāvollāsa-rati in mañjarī-bhāva. Is it merely a sañcārī-bhāva — a supporting or transitory emotion — or does it become the permanent governing love of the mañjarīs?
For me, the clearest answer is found in the teachings of my Gurudeva, 108 Śrī Śrīmad Ananta Dās Bābājī Mahārāja.
guru-mukha-padma-vākya, cittete koriyā aikya,
āra nā koriho mane āśā
śrī guru-caraṇe rati, ei sei uttamā gati,
je-prasāde pūre sarva āśā
Make the words emanating from the lotus mouth of śrī Guru one with your heart and do not aspire for anything else. Attachment to the lotus feet of śrī Guru is the greatest attainment. By his mercy, all desires are fulfilled.
His explanation is especially valuable because he does not deny the technical connection of bhāvollāsa with sañcārī-bhāva. Rather, he explains precisely why, in the case of the Rādhā-snehādhikā mañjarīs, this love becomes so predominant that it must be counted as sthāyī-bhāva.
Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī Defines Bhāvollāsa-rati
Śrī Gurudeva bases his explanation upon the famous statement of Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.5.128:
sañcārī syāt samonā vā kṛṣṇa-ratyāḥ suhṛd-ratiḥ |
adhikā puṣyamāṇā ced bhāvollāsa itīryate ||
“Those amongst Śrī Rādhārāṇī’s sakhīs whose love for Śrī Rādhā is equal to or slightly less than their love for Śrī Kṛṣṇa have love for Kṛṣṇa as sthāyī-bhāva, within which their love for Rādhā is counted as a sañcārī-bhāva, for that nourishes their basic love for Kṛṣṇa. But those sakhīs who love Rādhā more than Kṛṣṇa and whose feelings are increased due to constant absorption in this have the status of bhāvollāsa because their feelings have come to dominate all feelings, although they are officially sañcārī-bhāvas.”
And then Śrī Gurudeva gives the decisive conclusion:
“Thus, despite it all, this adhika snehā must be counted as a sthāyī-bhāva.”
This is an extremely important statement. Gurudeva does not conceal the fact that bhāvollāsa is technically connected with the category of sañcārī-bhāva. But neither does he stop there. In the Rādhā-snehādhikā mañjarīs, this love has become so predominant that it must be counted as sthāyī-bhāva.
Why Does It Become Sthāyī-bhāva?
The reason becomes clear when we look carefully at the distinction Śrī Gurudeva makes.
When a sakhī’s love for Śrī Rādhā is equal to or less than her love for Śrī Kṛṣṇa, her Kṛṣṇa-rati remains the governing permanent love. Her affection for Śrī Rādhā functions within that Kṛṣṇa-rati as a sañcārī-bhāva and nourishes it.
But something radically different happens in the Rādhā-snehādhikā mañjarīs.
Their love for Śrī Rādhā becomes greater than their love for Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
And it does not merely become greater for an isolated moment. Śrī Gurudeva explains that their feelings are “increased due to constant absorption” and eventually “come to dominate all feelings.”
That is the key.
A subordinate emotion normally serves the governing rati. But here the Rādhā-centered love becomes so powerful, so continuous and so predominant that it governs the entire emotional existence of the mañjarī.
Therefore Gurudeva concludes:
“This adhika snehā must be counted as a sthāyī-bhāva.”
It is not merely that bhāvollāsa lasts for a long time. It becomes the dominant organizing principle of the mañjarī’s entire devotional identity.
Rādhā-snehādhika — More Love for Rādhā
Elsewhere Śrī Gurudeva expresses the same siddhānta with remarkable clarity:
“In madhura-rasa, those among Śrī Rādhārāṇī’s girlfriends who love Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa equally or who love Kṛṣṇa a little more than Rādhā have the sthāyi-bhāva called śrī-kṛṣṇa-rati. Their love for Rādhārāṇī will be a sañcārī or passing sentiment. But if their love for Śrī Rādhārāṇī exceeds that for Śrī Kṛṣṇa, then it is known as bhāvollāsā-rati. Their sthāyi-bhāva is called rādhā-snehādhika, or having more love for Śrī Rādhā.”
Notice the words carefully:
“Their sthāyi-bhāva is called rādhā-snehādhika.”
This makes the theological structure wonderfully clear.
The mañjarīs belong to madhura-rasa, yet within that madhura-rasa their governing love is distinguished by Rādhā-snehādhika: their affection for Śrī Rādhā exceeds their direct affection for Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
This predominance is bhāvollāsa-rati.
Bhāvollāsa Does Not Mean Less Kṛṣṇa
This point is easily misunderstood. To say that the mañjarī loves Śrī Rādhā more than Śrī Kṛṣṇa does not mean that she is indifferent toward Kṛṣṇa.
Quite the opposite.
Śrī Gurudeva explains the inner principle with this beautiful statement:
āmāra īśvarī hana bṛndābaneśvarī |
tāṅra prāṇanātha bali’ bhaji giridhārī ||“My Goddess is Vṛndāvaneśvarī Śrī Rādhā; because Giridhārī is the Lord of Her life, I also worship Him.”
And he quotes the prayer:
tavaivāsmi tavaivāsmi
na jīvāmi tvayā vinā |
iti vijñāya devi tvaṁ
naya māṁ caraṇāntikam ||“I am Yours! I am Yours! I cannot live without You. O Goddess! Knowing this, please lead me to Your lotus feet.”
Śrī Gurudeva calls this the mūla-mantra of those who worship in mañjarī-bhāva. This is the heart of Rādhā-dāsya.
The mañjarī does not reject Kṛṣṇa for Rādhā. She approaches Kṛṣṇa through Rādhā, for Rādhā, and in the service of Rādhā.
Kṛṣṇa is infinitely dear to her precisely because He is the prāṇanātha — the Lord of the life — of her Svāminī.
Then Why Does a Mañjarī Sometimes Long Intensely for Kṛṣṇa?
Śrī Gurudeva anticipates this subtle question.
If Rādhā is the mañjarī’s supreme object of allegiance, why should she ever experience intense longing for Kṛṣṇa?
Gurudeva gives a beautiful example.
In meditation, the mañjarī may have brought an anxious Śrī Rādhā to the kuñja for Her meeting with Kṛṣṇa. But Kṛṣṇa has not arrived. Śrī Rādhā becomes overwhelmed by separation and begins to weep. Seeing Svāminī suffering, the maidservant goes searching for Kṛṣṇa. Now she herself develops an intense longing to find Him:
“Alas, Lord of Rādhā! Alas, Supreme Lover! Show Yourself to me. Your beloved Rādhā suffers a terrible burning sensation born of separation from You.”
Because of the intensity of the kiṅkarī’s longing, Kṛṣṇa reveals Himself to her. She then brings Him to Śrī Rādhā and performs her unique service to the Divine Couple.
Śrī Gurudeva therefore concludes that in certain forms of Yugala-sevā, Rādhā’s maidservant may have deep longing for Kṛṣṇa while maintaining greater affection for Śrī Rādhā. This is extremely important for understanding bhāvollāsa. The mañjarī’s Kṛṣṇa-rati has not disappeared.
It has become completely integrated into her Rādhā-dāsya.
She looks for Kṛṣṇa because Rādhā longs for Kṛṣṇa.
She seeks Kṛṣṇa because Rādhā is suffering without Him.
She serves Kṛṣṇa because He is the beloved of her Svāminī.
Her Kṛṣṇa-prema therefore moves within the greater current of her Rādhā-prema.
This Is the Upāsanā of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas
Śrī Gurudeva does not present this merely as an interesting classification within rasa-śāstra.
He connects it directly with Gauḍīya upāsanā:
“The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas who have taken shelter of Śrīman Mahāprabhu’s lotus feet and who follow the Six Gosvāmīs, headed by Rūpa and Sanātana, are following this upāsanā of mañjarī-bhāva or bhāvollāsa.”
He continues that the rāgānugā-bhajana of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas is accomplished by following the nitya-siddha mañjarīs of Vraja, who love Rādhā more than Kṛṣṇa.
And then comes a magnificent statement:
“In the kingdom of bhāva-sādhana, mañjarī-bhāva is the pinnacle of relish that a living entity can ascend to!”
Why the Mañjarīs Can Serve Where Even the Sakhīs Cannot
Bhāvollāsa is not merely an inner theological category. It has a direct consequence for sevā.
Śrī Gurudeva explains that Lalitā and the other principal sakhīs may sometimes, according to Śrī Rādhā’s desire, assume the position of heroines in relation to Kṛṣṇa. Because of this, there are circumstances in the most intimate pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa where their presence would produce shyness.
The mañjarīs are different. They never seek the position of independent heroines.
Śrī Gurudeva explains:
“The mañjarīs who are endowed with bhāvollāsa are especially absorbed in the different services of the Divine Pair and due to their oneness in feelings with Her, Śrī Rādhārāṇī considers them to be non-different from Her own body.”
For this reason, the mañjarīs can remain present even during the intimate meetings of Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava and perform confidential services there.
This reveals something profound about bhāvollāsa-rati. It is not merely “loving Rādhā more than Kṛṣṇa” as an abstract numerical comparison.
It means such profound identification with Śrī Rādhā’s happiness that the mañjarī’s own separate desire practically disappears within sevā.
Nothing but Rādhā’s Service — Even in a Dream
Śrī Gurudeva further illustrates the extraordinary Rādhā-niṣṭhā of the mañjarīs by citing Śrī Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī’s Vṛndāvana-mahimāmṛta:
rādhā-padābja-sevānya-spṛhā-kāla-trayojjhitām
rādhā-prīti-sukhāmbhodhāv apāre buḍitāṁ sadā
rādhā-padāmbujād anyat svapnānte’pi na jānatīm
Śrī Gurudeva explains that the mañjarī desires nothing other than the service of Śrī Rādhā’s lotus feet throughout the three phases of time — past, present and future. She is always immersed in the boundless ocean of ecstatic love for Rādhā, and even in dreams she knows nothing other than Rādhā’s lotus feet.
Now the meaning of sthāyī becomes almost visible. This is not a passing wave. It is not an occasional emotional coloring.
It is not something that appears, performs a supporting function and then disappears.
Past, present and future.
Day and night.
Even in dreams.
The mañjarī knows herself through Rādhā’s service. Her happiness is Rādhā’s happiness. Her longing follows Rādhā’s longing.
Her relationship with Kṛṣṇa follows Rādhā’s relationship with Kṛṣṇa. Her entire spiritual identity is organized around Rādhā-dāsya.
This is why Gurudeva can say that although this love is “officially” connected with the sañcārī category, its adhika-sneha must be counted as sthāyī-bhāva: it has come to dominate all feelings.
Bhāvollāsa Remains Within Madhura-rasa
One final distinction is essential. Bhāvollāsa-rati does not create a new rasa outside madhura-rasa.
Śrī Gurudeva explicitly begins his explanation with the framework:
“In madhura-rasa…”
He then distinguishes those whose governing sthāyī-bhāva is Kṛṣṇa-rati from those whose love for Śrī Rādhā exceeds their direct love for Kṛṣṇa and is therefore called bhāvollāsa-rati or Rādhā-snehādhika. Therefore these two levels should never be confused:
Rasa: madhura-rasa.
Distinctive permanent governing love of the mañjarī: Rādhā-snehādhika, expressed as bhāvollāsa-rati.
The mañjarī does not leave madhura-rasa because Rādhā becomes the overwhelming center of her love.
Rather, this overwhelming Rādhā-niṣṭhā is the distinctive form in which her participation in madhura-rasa is lived.
Bhāvollāsa Is Rādhā-dāsya Brought to Its Fullest Expression
When all these statements of Śrī Gurudeva are placed together, a remarkably coherent picture emerges.
Bhāvollāsa begins with a simple but revolutionary distinction: the mañjarī loves Śrī Rādhā more than she loves Śrī Kṛṣṇa directly.
But this does not diminish Kṛṣṇa. It changes the way Kṛṣṇa is loved.
For the mañjarī, He is above all the beloved of her Svāminī.
She seeks Him for Rādhā.
She brings Him to Rādhā.
She decorates Rādhā for Him.
She consoles Rādhā when He is absent.
She rejoices when He gives pleasure to Rādhā.
And she enters even the most confidential places of Yugala-līlā not to claim Kṛṣṇa for herself, but to increase the happiness of Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava.
This love becomes so powerful that it dominates all other feelings. Therefore, although technically discussed in relation to sañcārī-bhāva, Gurudeva says that this adhika-sneha must be counted as sthāyī-bhāva.
And this explains why the mañjarī can possess intense Kṛṣṇa-rati while remaining absolutely Rādhā-niṣṭhā. There is no contradiction.
Her love for Kṛṣṇa has become inseparable from her love for Rādhā.
Or, expressed in the simplest possible way:
“My Goddess is Vṛndāvaneśvarī Śrī Rādhā; because Giridhārī is the Lord of Her life, I also worship Him.”
And at the deepest level of surrender:
tavaivāsmi tavaivāsmi
na jīvāmi tvayā vinā |
iti vijñāya devi tvaṁ
naya māṁ caraṇāntikam ||“I am Yours! I am Yours! I cannot live without You. O Goddess! Knowing this, please lead me to Your lotus feet.”
Śrī Gurudeva calls this the mūla-mantra of those who worship in mañjarī-bhāva.
That is bhāvollāsa-rati.
That is Rādhā-snehādhika.
And that is the heart of mañjarī-bhāva.
