Entering the Path of Loving Devotion – Q&A on Rāgānugā Bhakti

1) Who am I and what is the goal of life?

At the deepest level, I am not this body, not even the mind. I am an eternal soul, part and parcel of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. My eternal dharma is to love and serve Him. The highest perfection of this service is to follow the mood of the Vrajavāsīs, especially the mañjarīs, the intimate maidservants of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. Thus, the ultimate goal of life is self-realization leading to mañjarī-bhāva—to realize and manifest my eternal identity in service to the Divine Couple in Vṛndāvana.

2) How do I know which relationship or bhāva towards the Divine Couple I desire? Is it already in my heart like a blueprint, or am I free to choose?

Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī explains:

sevā sādhaka-rūpeṇa siddha-rūpeṇa cātra hi

tad-bhāva-lipsunā kāryā vraja-lokānusārataḥ (BRS 1.2.295)

“Following the inhabitants of Vraja, one should perform service in one’s physical body and in one’s siddha body, with a desire for a particular bhāva.”

The key here is tad-bhāva-lipsunā—having the desire for a particular mood of devotion. This desire is not something we fabricate or pick as if from a menu. It arises through sādhu-saṅga, the association of realized devotees who embody a particular bhāva. By their mercy, inspiration stirs in the heart, and gradually the soul is drawn into a particular devotional mood. It is not that the exact relationship is rigidly predestined, but rather that, by the grace of sādhus and Śrī Gurudeva, the heart is nourished and naturally matures into the service identity most fitting for it. In our line, this means developing the greed to follow the mañjarīs, the intimate maidservants of Śrīmatī Rādhikā.

3) How can I attain this goal?

This goal is attained only through rāgānugā-bhakti—the path of devotion that follows the spontaneous love of the eternal residents of Vraja. It is not about rules and fear of transgression, but about developing a burning greed (lobha) to enter into their mood of loving service. When this greed arises, the sādhaka approaches Śrī Gurudeva, who guides and blesses the heart towards realization.

4) What is the difference between rāgānugā and vaidhi-bhakti?

In vaidhi-bhakti one serves Kṛṣṇa out of duty, respect, or fear of scriptural injunctions. The relationship is somewhat formal. In rāgānugā-bhakti, however, the driving force is inner attraction, greed, and love. One follows the eternal Vrajavāsīs not because of law, but because the heart cannot resist their sweetness. In short: vaidhi is motivated by rule, rāgānugā is motivated by love and attraction.

5) Am I qualified for rāgānugā-bhakti?

Yes—if there is the slightest spark of attraction to the pastimes of Rādhā and Śyāma in Vṛndāvana, you are qualified. The scriptures say: when this lobha arises, one should seek guidance from a bona fide guru, who examines the disciple’s taste and then mercifully reveals the path of service. Śrī Jīva Goswāmī explains that in the beginning this path is usually a mixture of vaidhi and rāgānugā—called ajata-ruci-rāgānugā, practice without fully awakened taste. As the attraction ripens into jata-ruci, genuine taste, the sādhaka’s practice naturally becomes more and more purely rāgānugā. Even a small drop of longing is enough to open the door, and from there, the journey deepens step by step.

6) How do I get to know my spiritual form and realize it?

This is the most precious gift of Śrī Gurudeva. By his mercy, the sādhaka receives siddha-praṇālī—the revelation of the eternal spiritual identity, the siddha-deha. It is not something one can invent or imagine. It is granted, like a hidden treasure chest being opened. Through sincere practice of rāgānugā-sādhana, like hearing, chanting and meditating and through loving service, that spiritual form gradually becomes realized and tangible in the heart.

May these simple answers give courage and inspiration to every beginner on the path of rāgānugā-bhakti. It all begins with a spark of attraction—and blossoms fully by the mercy of Śrī Gurudeva and Śrīmatī Rādhikā.
