VERSE 7:
PĀRĀVĀRA VIHĀRA KAUTUKĪ MANAḤ PŪREṆA KAṀSĀRIṆĀ
SPHĀRE MĀNASA JĀHNAVĪ JALABHARE TARYĀṀ SAMUTTHĀPITĀM
JĪRṆĀ NAUR MAMA CET SKHALED ITI MIṢĀC CHĀYĀDVITĪYĀṀ MUDĀ
PĀRE KHAṆḌITA KAÑCULĪṀ DHṚTA KUCĀṀ RĀDHĀṀ KADĀHAṀ BHAJE
One day Kaṁsāri (Kṛṣṇa) desires to have some fun by playing in the vast Mānasa Gaṅgā-lake, so He takes Śrī Rādhikā on the boat along with Her shadow (i.e. alone) and then says: “My boat is old and worn-out! What if it will sink?”, using this as a pretext to rip off Her blouse and blissfully grab Her breasts. When will I worship this Rādhā?
Stavāmṛta Kaṇā Vyākhyā:
In this verse, Śrī Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī prays for the worship of Śrī Rādhā after perceiving the very confidential lilas of Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava in the Mānasa Gangā-lake.
About the appearance of the Mānasa Gangā-lake it is said, that one day Śrīla Nanda Mahārāja became eager to bathe in the river Gangā, so he went on his way on a pilgrimage. As soon as he had reached the Govardhana Hill, though, Kṛṣṇa thought to Himself: “Why should My father go out of Vraja on some kind of pilgrimage? Isn’t Vraja sarva tīrthamaya, the abode containing all holy waters?”
Thinking like this, Kṛṣṇa called the Gaṅgā within His mind and the Gaṅgā revealed herself to everyone, riding on her Makarī-vehicle. Nanda and the other cowherders then bathed in her and gave up their plan to leave Vraja for taking a Gaṅgā-bath.
Actually, Mānasa Jāhnavī is eternally situated at the base of Govardhana Hill, as it is one of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s eternal playgrounds. The appearance-lila takes place only to nourish the transcendental flavours of the Nauka-līlā, the boating lila.
It is the rainy season and the Mānasa Jāhnavī is filled to the brim.
In the afternoon Śrīmatī and Her sakhīs come to the bank of the lake and see only one boat lying by its shore. They call out ‘Nāvika! Nāvika! (boatman! boatman!)’, and the rasika Nāvika, who illuminates the chest (surface) of the Gaṅgā, slowly steers His boat towards the shore, after pretending for long not to hear them. All the gopīs are astonished when they see that the boat is broken!
ḍāka diyā bole nāiyā nā āno ghāṭe;
āmarā hoibo pāra belā sab ṭuṭedekhiyā nāgara rāja jīrṇa tarī loiyā;
hāsiyā kohoye kathā kāṇḍārī hoiyāke dibe āmāre koho koteko betan;
eke eke pāra koribo yoto janrāi kohe yāhā cāho tāhā āmarā dibo;
kāṇḍārī kohoye hiyāra ratana loiboekākinī naukāya caḍilā vinodinī;
taraṅga bāḍilo tāya jīrṇa tari-khānitaraṅga dekhiyā tharahari kāṁpe rāi;
sābdhāne bāy naukā kāndārī kānāi
(Pada Kalpataru)
“They called the boatman and said: “Quickly take us across the lake! Our time is running out!” Seeing their plight, the king of gallants became a boatman, took His broken boat, laughed and said: ‘Tell Me, how much will You pay Me for My job? I can only take one person across each time!” Rāi said: “We will give You whatever You want!”, so the boatman replied: “I will take the jewels of Your heart (grab Your breasts)!”
Vinodinī boarded the boat alone, but the waves grew high and the boat was old. Seeing the high waves, Rāi trembled violently and Kānāi the boatman carefully steered the boat along.” Seeing how scared Śrīmatī is, the rasika Nāvika says:
“Rādhe! When I see the waves grow higher and higher I think this boat is very old and may sink! If it sinks there’s no other means to save Your life than swimming, so take off Your blouse and prepare for swimming!”
In this way the Rasika Nāvika Kṛṣṇa uses many clever tricks to make Śrīmatī take off Her blouse and to float in an ocean of bliss by grabbing Her breasts. The sakhīs and mañjarīs are beside themselves of bliss when they witness this amazing lila.
Then, when the vision vanishes, Śrīla Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī anxiously prays for Śrīmatī’s devotional service.
govinda rasika vara, vidagadha sunāgara,
kāma krīḍā yāhāra carita.
mānasa jāhnavī jale, vihāra korite chale,
nāvika hoilā adabhuta
“Govinda, the greatest of all aesthetic relishers, the clever amorous hero, is always engaged in all kinds of lusty affairs! Once He played a wonderful game by becoming a boatman on the Mānasa Gangā-lake!”
pārāpāra koribāre, bhāṅgā tari āni tīre,
sucāturye nāgarendra rāyaekākinī śrī rādhāra,
uttolane se naukāya,
boliteche mājha dariyāya
eke mora jīrṇā tari, tomāra yauvana bhāri,
sukumārī dekhoto cāhiyāyadi jalamagnā hoy,
sadā mora ei bhoy,
ki koribo nā pāi bhāviyā
“Cleverly the king of amorous heroes brought His broken boat to the shore to ferry Rādhikā. Śrī Rādhā boarded the boat alone, and when They were in the middle of the lake, the boatman said: “You see, My boat is old and Your youthful beauty is very heavy. I like to see Your tender beauty! I’m always so afraid of sinking! I can’t imagine what will happen then!’
eto boli śyāma rāya, hāsiyā nikaṭe yāy,
tyāga korāiyā kañculikāstana-yuga manohārī,
kare dhare giridhārī, rase ḍagamagi śrī rādhikā
“Saying this, Śyāma Rāya came closer and helped Her taking off Her blouse. Śrī Rādhikā floated in rasa while Giridhārī grabbed Her enchanting breasts!”
vicitra vilāsa dekhi, antarete mahāsukhī,
sphuraṇete raghunātha dāsasei Kṛṣṇa priyatamā,
pāñcālikā manoramā, sevo nitya prema kori āśa
“Raghunātha dāsa’s heart greatly rejoices when he sees this wonderful lila, and he always desires to render loving devotional service to this most enchanting beloved of Kṛṣṇa.”
