The Holy Name, the siddha deha and why Sri Gurudeva is necessary

Can the Holy Name bestow upon the sadhaka the revelation of his eternal spiritual form, the siddha deha?

Well, of course. Is there anything the Holy Name can´t do or bestow?
Srila Sanatana Goswami says that for him, the Holy Name is the beginning, the middle and the end…the alpha AND the omega.
The Holy Name is non-different from Sri Krishna…so of course the Holy Name can give everything…the highest prema, the revelation of the siddha deha…everything.

But the question is not “Can the Holy Name ____________?”
The question is CAN WE RECEIVE what the Holy Name CAN GIVE?

So, let us say the sadhaka reads in a book that the Hare Krishna-maha-mantra can give the highest perfection.
It is even written there in black and white…it is not even a secret mantra.
So, the sadhaka starts chanting the Holy Name. He may start with just muttering the mantra, then he may acquire a japa-mala and then he may chant a certain amount of names everyday.

After some time, the sadhaka may wonder: “Wow…I chant 10 rounds of the maha-mantra everyday…I still have not experienced what I have read…I have no pure prema for Krishna…and sometimes I even don´t like to chant the Holy Name.”

What is happening here?
We easily can say: “Yes, of course the Holy Name can give us prema and reveal the eternal siddha deha to the sadhaka. There is nothing the Holy Name cannot do or give.”
But are we really prepared to receive everything? Why is the sadhaka frustrated?

It is true. The Holy Name is all-powerful. But this subject matter is very deep and needs several layers of consideration.

Sriman Mahaprabhu told us:

namnam akari bahudha nija sarva saktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah
etadrisi tava kripa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrisam ihajani nanuragah

O Lord! You have given us many names of Yours to chant, investing them with all Your transcendental power, and there are no strict regulations as to when to chant or remember these names. Such is Your mercy, O Lord, but I am so unfortunate that I have no taste for this chanting.

All your transcendental power” – why can we not taste the nectar of the Holy Name? Why are we not feeling pure love of the Divine Couple?
Easy. Because we are not prepared yet. Our heart is the receptacle for this purest nectar. But our hearts are immersed in the taste of material sense enjoyment for millions of lifetimes.
We can´t feel the happiness and the bliss which IS the Holy Name because we are jaundiced by our material desires and their fulfillment.
The Holy Name is for us what a sugar piece is for a person with jaundice. It tastes bitter. But nevertheless, the doctor says to keep on eating the sugar. It will cure the jaundice. Same with us and the Holy Name. The Holy Name will surely bring about ALL power and perfection…when our heart is ready to receive that great gift.

When we become humble and when we purify our heart, the rays of the sun of the Holy Name can shine into our hearts. This all can only happen by the mercy of Sri Guru and the Vaishnavas, Krishna´s messengers of mercy.
It can also happen in a second.

We have to be free from offenses of any kind.

The scriptures and the saints say that only offenses committed to the holy name can dim its greatness. There is no greater misfortune in the world for a practising devotee than this!

eka krishna name kore sarva papa nasa
premera karana bhakti korena prakasa
premera udaye hoy premera vikara
sveda kampa pulakadi gadgadasru dhara
anayase bhava kshaya krishnera sevana
eka krishna namera phale pai eto dhana
heno krishna nama yadi loy bahubara
tabu yadi prema nahe, nahe asrudhara
tabe jani aparadha tahate pracura
krishna nama bija tahe na hoy ankura
(Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi-lila, chapter 8)

“One utterance of Krishna’s name destroys all sins and causes devotion and love of God to appear. When prema arises, the devotee shows all its symptoms, such as sweating, shivering, horripilating, a faltering voice and crying streams of tears. Liberation from the material world, which is attained by serving Krishna, is easily attained by simply once uttering the name of Krishna. When you chant this name of Krishna many times, but still you don’t feel love and there are no tears of love streaming from your eyes, then I know that there must be many offenses committed, so that the seed of Krishna’s name cannot sprout.”

One may ask here: If the glories of the holy name are so unhindered, then why is there still consideration of offenses? If offenses dim the greatness of the name, then how can the holy name be called unrestricted? The answer is that mist cannot cover the sun, it can only cover the sun from our eyes. Because mist may cover the sun, the sunrays cannot fall on us. Similarly, nothing can actually cover the self-manifest greatness of the holy name, but offenses cover our hearts in such a way that its powers cannot fall into our hearts. But when the mist dissolves, the sunrays can fall on us unhindered. Similarly, when offenses disappear, the strength of the holy name is freely experienced in the heart.”

(Srila Ananta das Babaji, tika on the Siksastakam)

We could also ask: If the Holy Name can give everything, why do we need a Sri Gurudeva?
Why do we need to take diksha-mantra-initiation from Sri Gurudeva?
Isn´t the Holy Name enough as the all-in-all?

Chanting the Holy Name leads the genuine and sincere sadhaka to a true (sad) Gurudeva. When the sadhaka receives the Holy Name from his Gurudeva, it will lead him to prema, the purest love of God.
The diksha-mantras are very important too.

Srila Narayana Maharaja once explained that the Holy Name in our conditioned state is like raw rice. Diksha-mantras act then like fire, water and pot to “cook the rice”, so that we can eat and digest the rice.

The maha-mantra is a “call-out” mantra in the “vocative case”. We call out to whom? Krishna. Which Krishna? Only Krishna?
No. We call out to Radha AND Krishna. “Hare” is for Srimati Radhika. So which Krishna do we call out to?
We call out to Radha´s Krishna. The Krishna Who sports in Vrindavana. The Beloved of the gopis. The “One-and-only” for the inhabitants of Vrindavana.

The diksha-mantras will reveal our OWN relationship to Sri Sri Radha Krishna.
They are mantras in the “to WHOM”- case (dative case).
“I meditate on WHOM?” –
“Krishna, Govinda, Gopijana-Vallabhaya, Kamadeva.”

Without the diksha-mantras there can be no relationship with the Divine Couple.

Srila Rupa Goswami is our chief acarya.
He wrote:

guru-padashrayas tasmat krsna-diksadi-siksanam
vishrambhena guroh seva sadhu-vartmanuvartanam

(1) Submission to the lotus feet of the Guru (Spiritual Master); (2) Receiving diksha-mantras from him and instructions on bhakti; (3) serving the spiritual master with affection; (4) following in the path of saints.

Krishna Himself tells us in the Gita:

tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.

So as rupanugas, we follow Srila Rupa Goswami.
The first 3 recommendations of our foremost acarya refer to Sri Gurudeva.
Without the mercy of Sri Gurudeva, NOTHING is possible.

yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado
yasyaprasadan na gatih kuto ‘pi
dhyayan stuvams tasya yashas trisandhyam
vande guroh sri-charanaravindam

“By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krsna. Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement. Therefore, I should always remember and praise the spiritual master. At least three times a day I should offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master.”

So yes, the Holy Name can give us everything…via the transparent medium called Sri Gurudeva.

Now it also written in shastra that some very rare sadhakas will not need to take diksha in this life again because of previous lives, but they still do so in order to teach the conditioned souls.

Will the Holy Name reveal to us our siddha deha?
Sure, why not?
If we are on that high level that we can talk with the Holy Name (the Name IS Krishna, remember?), of course the Name can tell us our siddha deha.
Fortunate are those who are on such a high level. But again, without the mercy of Sri Gurudeva, this will not be possible.

To make it more “easier” (it is really not so easy though…LOL), usually Sri Gurudeva reveals the siddha deha to the sadhaka and the sadhaka performs bhajan under the strict tutelage of his Sri Gurudeva.
Those on the level of rati can easily perceive and serve in the siddha deha and those who are still in the process of bhajana-kriya towards anartha-nivritti, ruci and then rati, they have to endeavour more in their daily bhajan also in strict accordance to the instructions of Sri Gurudeva.

WHEN Sri Gurudeva reveals the siddha deha is entirely up to him. He will know when the time is right for the sadhaka and it is not a point of discussion WHICH Gurudeva will give WHEN.
This is a very private matter between Sri Gurudeva, the sadhaka and of course ultimately, Sri Krishna.
